How it works
Do I need electricity?
The wood-fired hot tub and the wood-fired sauna need no electricity. A cold plunge with a chiller needs a power outlet; the ice version does not.
How long does the hot tub take to heat?
1.5 to 3 hours depending on the volume of water and whether the tub is insulated. The barrel sauna takes 45 to 75 minutes.
What temperatures do they reach?
The hot tub is best between 37 and 40 °C (99 to 104 °F). The sauna reaches about 90 °C (194 °F). A chilled plunge holds close to 4 °C (39 °F).
Can I use salt water or chlorine?
Yes. The stainless steel coil works with fresh water, salt water or chlorinated water.
What firewood should I use?
Dry, well-sized firewood. In the rainy season, keep it under a roof so it lights easily.
Climate and care
Does the wood handle the Costa Rican climate?
Thermally modified wood handles humidity well. To make it last, the sauna sits on raised footings, gets a UV-protective oil and should be checked for termites once a year.
Is it safe?
Yes, with some care: check the temperature before getting in, do not use the tub or sauna after drinking alcohol, supervise children and keep the fire away from anything that burns. If you are pregnant or have a heart condition, check with your doctor.
